D2R2 2024 (105k to Rowe)

This year's edition of the Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee found me on the 105k route to Rowe. With an additional 1,000 feet of climbing over the classic 100k route, I was a little nervous heading into the event. Overall, however, I found this route to be more scenic than the more popular 100k and surprisingly very manageable. This was my 6th D2R2, but my first time on the 105k route.

What really made this a great ride though was my riding group. We were rolling five deep, which really did a lot to boost morale for everyone. Sometimes I wonder if there's actually a way to quantify the energy gained from good riding buddies. Maybe there's a Garmin setting somewhere?  We kept a steady pace and averaged about 11 mph for the entire ride. For me this was perfect since I've never been a particularly fast rider. At various times, we took turns leading, sweeping, and picking up the rear. Again, camaraderie goes a long way in helping the miles go by, especially on the big climbs.

The rest stops along the 105k route also made this a very manageable option, especially the one at the top of the dreaded Patten Hill. This rest stop was really the carrot at the end of the stick for me. Prior to that, the lunch stop at Pelham Lake was outstanding. It was also a lot less crowded than the 100k lunch stop which made it a little more enjoyable and relaxing. While I like the energy of the 100k route, the 105k offers a more serene experience since their are fewer riders. After Patten Hill, the 100k rejoined the route, however, as we rolled back towards Deerfield and Mill Village Road.

I was very surprised that the extra 1,000 feet of climbing didn't feel all that bad. I was definitely exhausted by the end of Patten Hill, but not as exhausted as I thought I'd be. I would pick the 105k again over the 100k.

Also, my new 2024 Specialized Diverge Comp performed flawlessly over the terrain too. The Future Shock stem does a lot to smooth out the rougher roads, which were few and far between on this ride compared to The Mix Tape.

***September 6, 2025 UPDATE***

I ventured out to Deerfield, MA again this year and rode the same route, but with a few detours due to road closures. The 2025 105k edition featured MORE climbing, but was still a great day in the saddle. While one member of our group from last year couldn't make it, we still had five solid riders out on the course. The weather was great and the views were spectacular. I've included a few pictures from both events below.
