I'm glad we got the ride in when we did, because Green River Road got completely washed out by Hurricane Irene. Also, this pic was sent yesterday morning from the Franklin Land Trust people:
In case you're guessing, that "pond" was our campsite. Unfortunately, the local host farm lost some crops. The crops were uninsured, so whatever food the Trust has leftover will go towards the workers. Good timing!
Here's the email I received today:
The entire field is now under a foot of mud, but if you think you lost something on the course, please let Sandy know.
The amazing thing about the storm here was how it left most areas intact. I do not even have a stick to clean up off my lawn. But the Deerfield River is half a mile wide now, from east of Route 5 all the way over Lower Road.
Green River Road has been washed away completely in places, although this happened in 2005, and the road was rebuilt.
Eunice Williams Covered Bridge (the first covered bridge on the 115K and 40-mile) barely survived. One abutment was destroyed, putting the bridge sloping down at a 10-degree angle, and 150 feet of road before it, plus the dam, were obliterated ten feet deep. Unreal. They don't call it "flood plain" for nothing.
The saddest news is that our host Pioneer Gardens lost a staggering amount of uninsurable crops. We have donated leftover ride food to the affected workers, but they have a long road ahead.
