I first rode Rocky Woods several years ago after reading about it on the NEMBA website. At the time, I don't remember it being a very great experience. So for whatever reason, I thought I'd tackle the trails again yesterday (in 90 degree heat!). I entered on the right of Rocky Woods Drive after parking at the now defunct bowling alley.
After about a few hundred feet into the trail I took a random left and explored what looked like some meandering dirt bike paths. They started out good but eventually turned into an overgrown mess with tons of downfall. At many points, I had to get off the bike and walk into the think undergrowth to get around the trunks. The moths were not pleased.
After about three miles of stop and go in the thick undergrowth, I finally found some nicer ATV trails that offered some decent technical climbs and descents. The terrain reminded me of Massasoit, especially the back side near the hill.
The trails were very hard to follow and I definitely recommend entering the area from Glebe Street or behind the pub. Again, I wasn't particularly impressed, yet, there seem to be so many trails out here that I'll probably go back eventually...and bring more water.
