A Hockomock Sojourn

On a whim, I drove down Prospect Hill Street in Raynham searching for a better trail head into the infamous Hockomock Swamp. I had already hiked and rode on the elevated rail bed earlier this season. It was nice, however, it only passes through a sliver of the vast swamp.

At the end of the road, I found this mysterious trail and a parking lot next to it:

As I hiked, the road eventually tapered into a small trail. The trail then became quite allusive and sank into various mud pits and water holes.

The trail was more of an ATV path than a planned trail. However it was really the only trail in the area.

These types of trees appear in large tightly packed groves elsewhere in the swamp. They have a characteristic spiral growth pattern. I'm guessing they might be white cedars.

This appears to be some type of town boundary marker.

As I walked back to the parking lot, I noticed another path somewhat hidden behind some large rocks. It appears to move further west into the swamp. This path will probably be my next expedition into the infamous Hockomock Swamp!!
