North Hill Marsh (Duxbury, MA)

North Hill Marsh
Mayflower Street
Duxbury MA, 02332

This park was the secret gem of South Shore mountain biking, but since mountain biking has increased in popularity again, it's now a little more traveled. Tucked away in Duxbury, this extensive system of trails loops around several marsh and pond systems (if you couldn't figure that out from the name). Terrain ranges from flowing single-track to technical cross-country over roots and rocks. The trails are all marked and expertly maintained by the Mass Audobon Society. Hunting and fishing are forbidden, however, they do not outlaw mountain biking.

After I finish the "blue loop", I usually cross Mayflower Street to another great spot. Round Pond is a round pond...let that one sink in. It offers similar terrain as North Hill Marsh, but on a smaller scale. This  serene landscape also brushes against a network of cranberry bogs. The paths around Round Pond offer a good chance to spin your legs after the persistent climbing at North Hill Marsh. There's also a short "pump track" where the red route and white route converge. It's a bit hidden, but it'll put a smile on your face when you find it. It's about as close to BMX as I get.

Overall, this is probably my favorite destination spot to ride on the South shore. There's little sand, lots of trail, and lots of roots. Between the towering scrub pines and the diverse wildlife, it might become your favorite spot too. As always, please help the folks at Mass Audubon and Duxbury Conservation by riding courteously and picking up after yourself. Happy trails!
